Did I need to re-cycle my aquarium after change of fish?
I have started a aquarium, and have some bluegills that I caught at a local lake. I don’t like the feel of the fish so I’m gonna release the bluegills and start of with some tropical fish maybe some Angle fish or something. Since the fish is completely different, should I empty the tank and start new or just do a partial water change.
thanks

any time you think of keeping fish, you want to know the specific water quality requirements of the specific fish you are keeping. Building you tank to your fish works well because you are putting them in an optimum environmnet. Do a lot of research before you choose your fish, and don’t get all your information from the people at the pet store. You have no clue if they are knowledgable or just trying to get a sale. While the tanks biological filtration may be established, the water may be too soft or hard for the fish you choose. It also may have a very different ph. For example, some fish, like Discus, prefer a lower ph, while chiclids prefer higher. It’s a huge difference that can mean death to your fish.
I personally would restart for another reason…you caught the fish from the wild. They could have brought with them strains of paracites and bacteria that a native species can fight off, where as a tropical species will not. Many fishes at a petstore may also be wild caught as well. However, they have useually undergone some sort of medication before you pruchase.
I hope that helps!
Hi in my experience fresh water is easy to care for..I would do a partial water change and thats it.. your new fish should be just fine in the tank… Good luck
Why does it matter what the fish feels like? They all feel the same and you shouldnt be holding them anyway. I think just to be safe you should change all the water. That way nothing from the lake contaminates the tank when you put the angelfish in there.
