I’m 21 years old and my 8 year old cousin hooked me into fishing. I’m a beginner with next to zero experience but one lousy attempt as a kid. I live in the Bay Area (East Bay – http://ebparks.org/activities/fishing) in Northern California. I’ll be Freshwater Fishing in lakes primarily by boat occasionally around the lake’s shore. The lakes and reservoirs around here contain Trout, Catfish, Bass, Sturgeon, Crappie, Bluegill, and Sunfish. I’m looking into buying my first own Rod and Reel or Rod/Reel Combo around (Willing to spend more or save a few dollars). Spinning Rod? Casting Rod? Open-Bail Spinning Reel? Closed Spin Casting Reel? I’m hoping to one day become an experienced amateur angler. What type of Fishing Rod and Reel should I buy?

If you have any advice with any other fishing gear I will highly appreciate it (Tackles, Baits, Lures, Jigs, Hooks, Sinkers, Fishing Lines). I have zero equipment as of right now. Thank you in advance.
After posting this question and reading your answers I have looked into these three Rod/Reel combos. Any suggestions?

I want to do pier fishing, fresh and saltwater lake fishing, and boat fishing in the ocean. It seems like all the fishing rods and reels are specific to salt/freshwater or the type of bait or fish you want to catch. I’d be happy catching any type of fish. Does such a rod and reel exist? If not, I guess I could get two. What type of rod and reel(s) would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
As for price, I’m looking to spend up to 0 per rod.
Okay, so how many rods would I need? What types of rods would you suggest? The brand and model names would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi. I’m planning to buy a good quality all-rounder fishing rod and reel combo (Shimano Crucial/Shimano Stradic), but I’m not sure whether to get a Crucial 6’6/Stradic 2500 or Crucial 7′/ Stradic 3000. What are the pros and cons? I know there isn’t a big difference but I want to get the best purchase.

I mainly do light/med fishing, targeting bream, snapper, whiting, flathead, threadfin salmon and jewfish (10kg). I’m usually on a boat, but sometimes on land.

well actually I’ve fished before but its been so long that I have to say first timer. lol

I saw a rod reel combo from Shakespeare at walmart for around USD. I want to shoreline fish so by now no fresh water or boat fishing just shoreline and peers.
specs are IIRC, 12-25lbs line, 7 feet tall.

I went to bass pro shop and saw a Daiwa® D-Wave™ Saltwater Spinning Rod and Reel Combo. it looked thick and not so wiggly at the tip.

this will be an occasional use item. so in your opinion and please give some info why is a best buy. the Shakespeare or the Daiwa?

            any feedback is well appreciated.

            thanks

I am really going to take up fishing this year. I plan on getting a Jon Boat and some new gear. I never fished like this before. When I was younger I use to go almost everyday for a few summers. However I stopped. I rather fish off a boat than shore. So that’s why I am going to purchase a small boat. Anyways, back to my question. I want to by a new rod and reel. Any suggestions. I have no Idea what to get. I plan on going bass fishing maybe use some spinner bait and some live bait as well. I am open to try a bait casting reel or open reel. None of the closed reels. I know back when I was younger the setup to get was a shimano . Any advise to what reel action, size rod etc….. Any help would be great especially from serious anglers…. Thanks

great news! i have successfully retrieved the rod and reel that was yanked off the bulkhead a week ago. my husband & i took the boat out today and dragged the channel with treble hooks. i couldn’t believe my eyes when on the 3rd cast i snagged the rod. once i got a hold of it i tried reeling it in. it was hung up on something on the bottom.

i was so hoping the fish that took it would still be on the line. eventually i got it loose but no fish. i guess he did manage to shake it loose after all. still had the hook and weight on there though. my son is in disbelief as he is getting ready to pay me the he owes for betting that i would never see my rod & reel again. LOL! anyway, my question is what should i do with it now? should i take it apart and clean it? thanks everyone.

I’m looking for a new rod this year and could use some advice. I already have a 9 foot tsunami rod for surf, and im looking to upgrade a pole for the bay. I have a boat, and i hav some spots of docks that I fish nightly. What would you suggest? rod and reel. not looking to spend more then 300 on both. I’ve grown to like tsunami’s but what else is out there. Something not too long or too thick, but strong. prob 15-30 lbs.. about…
