Hello. I am a fisherman who goes ocean shore fishing here in CA and I’m looking for a good telescopic landing net (the ones where you can extend the handle) to scoop up my catch. The other week I had a huge fish on my line, but didn’t have a net in hand, and my line broke. I fish from the shore and the water is about 6-10 feet below me. I’m looking for something that folds to a decent compact size that I could bring with me in case I land the big one. Oh and I only intend to use it once in awhile…only for those 4-plus pounder fish. Any advice on which ones are good, reliable, not too heavy, and relatively compact?
I had the idea of using heavier line or a bigger pole, but I really love fishing fish on smaller poles…thanks in advance:)
Hey, thanks for the info…that really helped.
James–I took a look at the net you recommended and it looks nice. Here’s my situation…I like to fish light and not bring a ton of gear with me and I don’t even want to use a net for ocean shore fishing, but the other day I had a huge 5-7 pound fish on, but it snapped when I tried to lift it out of the water, thus, now I know I need a net just in case. Ideally, this net would be light and can fold compactly to around 2 feet, and extend to 6-10 feet. The one you mentioned folds to 4 feet and at first that sounded kinda big, but now that I think about it, it could work? Are they easy to use? Durable? Also, say I’m alone and have a huge fish on my line, how easy or difficult is it to extend and put together the net without having to fumble around too much? Oh and I’ll probably only use a net like this once in a blue moon…only for those "bigger" fish out there. Thanks for your help.
You guys are amazing, thanks for the help. I emailed around a few places that have these telescopic nets to find out how much they weigh.
James–do you know where you can get the 8′ one? I looked around and all I saw was the 6.5′ and I am not sure that is long enough.
For the telescopic handle to lock into place is it better to have one that "clicks" into place or to have one where you turn it with your wrist to lock it?
chonanba–that was a great idea you mentioned on having the net already functional, with only having to deal with extending the handle when necessary, so thanks.
Ok, I just found a frabill tru-trax landing net that extends to 8 feet (a lot more pricey though at compared to ), but it kinda looks heavy and bulky…I wonder if there are other ones out there? If anyone has used this or other similar nets please share your experience, thanks.
